What the Fuck (er)?!
Fucker! This was still the name of the Fuggers when they came to the city in 1367, which was later nicknamed “Fuggerstadt” should receive. In Augsburg, the family quickly made a name for itself in the textile trade, but the real rise was yet to come…

Jakob Fugger was born in 1459. After his training in Venice and Romehe took over the family business at the end of the century. His approach: investments in the mining business. First silver mines near Salzburg, then other metals throughout Europe. Jakob Fugger realized early on that business scale and he expand must. There were also other obvious Financial transactions.

Jakob Fugger lent his money. And not just to companies, kings and emperors, no! Also to entire countries such as England, Portugal or Denmark – and even to the Pope himself! In the end, Jakob Fugger was so powerful that he even financed the election of Charles V as Holy Roman Emperor. Converted, his assets today would amount to around 350 billion euros. Jacob had thus clearly earned the nickname “the rich man”.

Jakob Fugger died in 1525, but his legacy remained. Under his nephew Anton Fugger, the family’s power was initially maintained, but gradually structural changes were to diminish the family’s wealth and importance. Today, they no longer mix it up on the stage of the super rich and billionaires with. What remains of Jakob Fugger, however, is the Fuggerei. One of the oldest existing social housing estates in the world. Here the Monthly rent only one Rhenish guilder since time immemorial! This is currently a modest 88 cents.
