Old market in the 1920s
Experience the fascinating world of Heinzel zu Köln! With the VR experience, you travel through scenes from the famous poem by August Kopisch from 1836. In a historic vintage bus, you travel into a fantastic, underground world and discover the crafts of the Heinzel.
Your journey begins in the wintry Alter Markt of the 1920s. After a peaceful atmosphere, the floor opens up in front of Bechergasse and you enter a mysterious underworld full of illuminated cellars and hard-working Heinzel.

You see the Heinzel zu Köln at work in various trades: In a stonemason’s workshop, they contribute to the construction of Cologne Cathedral. Then you discover a carpentry workshop where they work on wood and stand at the workbench. The tour continues into a flour-dusty bakery where the Heinzel are busy baking bread – surrounded by sacks of flour and an old oven. In the cooperage, they devote themselves to barrel production, fill wine into barrels and ensure that everything is perfectly prepared.
Pitter outwits the Heinzel
The curiosity of the people eventually becomes the Heinzel’s undoing in Cologne: when peas are scattered, they stumble and are discovered. They then disappear, never to be seen again. In the end, you return from the underworld to the festively decorated Alter Markt with its huge Christmas tree. You see how the Heinzel leave the city with trumpets and drums. But a glimmer of hope remains: Perhaps they will return one day – for the hearts of good people.
