The diversity of dinosaurs – species and characteristics

Dinosaurs were an incredibly diverse group of animals. From small, fast hunters to gigantic herbivores – they adapted to a wide variety of habitats. Some of the best-known dinosaur species are:
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex – The “king of the dinosaurs”, a fearsome predatory giant.
  • Triceratops – An imposing appearance with its striking neck shield and three horns.
  • Brachiosaurus – One of the largest herbivores that reached high treetops with its long neck.
  • Velociraptor – Small, agile and intelligent, known from films such as “Jurassic Park”.

When did dinosaurs live? A look at the history of the earth

The dinosaur era spanned three major geological periods:
  • Triassic (252-201 million years ago) – The first dinosaurs evolved and began to spread.
  • Jurassic (201-145 million years ago) – A heyday of dinosaurs with numerous species.
  • Cretaceous period (145-66 million years ago) – The last phase before their mass extinction began.

Why did the dinosaurs die out? The leading theories

The sudden extinction of the dinosaurs around 66 million years ago is one of the greatest mysteries in the history of the earth. The leading theory is that a huge asteroid hit the earth, leading to drastic climate changes. Volcanic eruptions and other environmental changes may also have played a role. While the dinosaurs disappeared, some of their descendants survived.
